Airline fares, hotel accommodations, and now even adequate travel insurance can be readily availed of from most travel agencies via their packaged trip offerings. Accidents and emergencies are actually rather common when people travel but these are often disregarded by travelers when they do travel. There are a number of travelers who have experienced firsthand how these travel pitfalls can affect any trip.

In addition to a person’s own concerns may it be medical or not there are also some other elements that coverage can protect the traveler from like when companies close down and declare bankruptcy, when rental vehicles are not ready as agreed upon, when hotel reservations have been lost, and also when there is a case of over booking for the air line. Travel consultants will always tell travelers that it is a good decision to avail of some form of travel insurance. There are a lot of factors which can easily affect a trip and therefore people need to have the proper judgment and get travel insurance if they see fit.

There is a need for a standard policy if a traveler wants to file a claim for a trip cancelled due to a medical emergency. Not having a good reason to cancel travel plans will always incur penalties for the traveler which insurance companies will never shoulder and this article will give out more examples pertaining to when and where insurance is applicable. However some travel insurers have begun offering all encompassing plans that pay for just about anything that may go wrong during your trip.

One travel insurance company provides assistance of ten thousand dollars each for medical emergencies and company bankruptcy as well as another four hundred for possible cancellation fees. If a traveler experiences a twelve hour flight delay or loses some belongings also when hotel reservations have been lost a policy like this will issue a refund. This is a policy which will also cost a lot of money.

There are insurance policies which can be availed of for about eight percent of the total travel expenses. Trip cancellation plans will reimburse five dollars and fifty cents per hundred dollars of coverage a traveler purchases. Because travel agencies make travel insurance a part of their travel packages the insurance companies are now booming.

The cost of insurance can be removed from the overall package should the traveler wish to do so. It is more likely that people will avail of travel insurance when a travel package includes the policy already. How beneficial is travel insurance to the everyday traveler?

Claims can be made when policies extend to a particular situation but the absence of an insurance policy will offer no security for the traveler. When it comes to unsafe locations then refunds are quite easy to get. The condition in this situation is that the company should be the one to cancel the trip or if the country’s government issues a travel advisory.

It is possible for trouble to erupt in countries without prior warning and when this happens some people tend to back out of travel plans. Refunds will not be made when people have the reason of being afraid to push through with it.

When you’re heading off on your holidays it’s important to check that you’ve got everything.

Alongside the clothes, toys for the kids and the all important sun cream, there’s also the paperwork to take care of.

Before you travel it’s important to ensure you have some form of cover in case anything should happen to yourself or your family whilst abroad.

As well as arranging some travel insurance, you may need other paperwork depending on where you are holidaying to, as well as covering yourself for any additional activities you want to participate in – including winter sports.

If you’re travelling from the UK to European destinations it can be worth your while to take out a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

This handy little card replaced the old E111 form system at the beginning of 2006. The card entitles holidaymakers to reduced costs should they require medical assistance if something should happen on their trips.

However, the card itself is not a substitute for holiday insurance, and many fall into the trap of believing that the EHIC card will be all they need for when they go on holiday to Europe.

The EHIC card is valid for three to five years and can be useful for expatriates as well as holidaymakers, although it might not cover all types of treatment – so you may find yourself having to pay a small contribution to your medical treatment.

Should you require medical treatment whilst holidaying in Europe, taking out an EHIC before you travel could help reduce the cost of your treatment.

As for the treatment itself, you’re likely to receive treatment at a state-provided level, which might not be quite what you are used to on the NHS. Some countries may also charge for some treatments which you may be used to getting free of charge back home on the NHS.

Combined with a travel insurance policy, this handy little card can provide holidaymakers with peace of mind from a financial point of view.

What is a backpacker travel insurance?

Backpacker travel insurance is not the same as annual holiday insurance, this is mistake many young travelers make when purchasing insurance. Annual holiday insurance is designed for your average holiday maker, who goes abroad a couple of times a year usually for a week or two at a time, and spends most of their time relaxing on the beach. This is very different to the habits of your average backpacker, if there is such a thing as an average backpacker. If you are planning on travelling for long periods of time annual holiday insurance usually doesn’t cover your stay out of the country for more than a few weeks at a time.

Backpacker travel insurance initially covers any travel period from a total of 90 days to a one year trip, with a pay as you go benefit enabling you to extend, as often as you want to, the duration of your travel insurance up to 18 months. Online Backpacker travel insurance will take care of you during your longer than usual travels, but will also give you the freedom to fill this time with exciting opportunities as you will automatically be covered for a huge range of hazardous sport that you may get the chance to try.

Hopefully it’ll be an adventure of a life time, but you’ll be visiting strange places where you may not even speak the language. Don’t worry, you’ll no more feel like a stranger in an unknown world. Find all your information on travel insurance online. Avail of trip cancellation insurance and holiday insurance. Other features include temporary car insurance, health insurance, medical insurance and prescription services.

It’s wise to have a good choice for all backpackers and people backpacking around the world, whether you have taken a gap year and taking time out from your studies, business or just a holiday, vacations, working abroad or studying abroad as a student. Get special covers on adventurous sports, skiing, and providing protection for activities such as scuba diving, paragliding, bungee jumping and winter sports.

Baggage and Possessions Cover. Ensure that your policy protects your possession or you will be unable to claim any compensation for stolen or lost items. Your policy should also cover any administrative costs incurred in the event that your passport is stolen and needs to be reissued.

Emergency Medical Cover. This will provide financial cover for any costs you have to make in the event that you need medical attention.

Holiday Cancellation. If due to unforeseen circumstances you have to cancel your trip early, you will be compensated for any monies lost.

Personal Liability. This is legal cover for any accident, injury or harm you might inadvertently inflict on another individual.

Rescue and Repatriation. In the event of a medical emergency rescue, all your costs will paid by your insurer. This should include helicopter rescue.

Travel Delay. Compensation for any money lost due to a delayed departure, though this will often only be paid after you have been delayed for a set length of time outlined in the policy wording.

Always learn to verify the terms and conditions of any insurance. Carry out research online, always compare the Backpacker Travel Insurance insurance package rate and be aware of the fact that a cheap insurance is not the best one. Comparing different insurance packages is quite essential.

Even the best planned vacations can be interrupted by glitches and emergencies. You lose your luggage. You slip, or catch a bug, and need medical treatment. These not only disrupt your itinerary, but can cost you a lot of money.

That’s where travel insurance (also called travel protection) comes in. Specially designed to address the situations and risks involved in travel, it provides coverage from the moment you leave, to the moment you return to your home.

For example, travel insurance can reimburse you for any baggage or items that you may lose during your trip. This is particularly important if you plan to buy anything of high value, such as local antiques, or are carrying very expensive jewellery or electronic equipment.

Your standard medical insurance also tends to be limited to a network area, so without travel insurance, you will have to pay for any hospitalization or medical treatments you receive while abroad. This can be very pricey, not to mention stressful: imagine being sick and broke in an unfamiliar country! If you are visiting a place where doctor’s bills and other emergency procedures are expensive, or where there are very real health risks, travel insurance is absolutely crucial.

Travel insurance is also very important if you plan to take a driving vacation. Many automobile policies will not extend coverage outside the country you live. The last thing you want to worry about is how to pay for a rental vehicle that got smashed by another driver, or take over the costs of repairing a car who you may have hit (a risk anyone takes by travelling through unfamiliar roads with unfamiliar driving rules).

Travel insurance can also provide protection against emergencies that are so specific to going abroad that they cannot be covered by your standard insurance policy. This includes trip interruption. Any fees or down payments that you may have made that would otherwise have been forfeited if you had suddenly cancelled your trip will be returned to you.

Travel protection plans can also provide assistance services like an emergency hotline and medical transportation services. This is very valuable when a crisis hits in a foreign country, where you may not speak the language or know your way around a city well enough to locate the nearest emergency facility. When you are distraught or distressed, or when time is of the essence and you need to get help right away, travel protection plans can be your safety net. You may be a stranger in a strange land, but you are not alone.

You may ask, “Why should I get travel insurance when I have really good regular insurance?” Many people are under the impression that their automobile, homeowners’ credit card and medical policies are so “extensive” that they would automatically provide protection anywhere in the world. That is not necessarily true. You need to read the fine print. If you don’t, and fail to take the additional coverage given by travel protection, then you may find out your insurance policies’ limitation the hard way: when you are caught in an emergency, and spending a large amount of money (on top of the deductibles and co-payments) with the hope of compensation very far off. Travel protection is a sure guarantee of security. Now you can take your vacation with complete peace of mind–and isn’t that what vacations are about?

We can all recall that at some point or other someone has recommended we take out some form of cover when we travel. Indeed you may have read one of the many articles in abundance on the subject. I myself have written many articles on the topic of travel insurance, including guides and coverage of news items worthy of interest. However, it suddenly dawned on me that I had failed to examine perhaps the most fundamental part of travel insurance; this being the cover it has to offer. I’ve maybe touched on it in earlier articles and made brief reference to levels of cover to aim for. Yet, I haven’t evaluated each aspect of cover and how this relates to you the potential purchaser.

The key features of the majority of holiday insurance policies are as follows;

1: Medical cover; this feature will cover the costs of hospitalisation and medical treatment you receive whilst on your holiday. If you are travelling in the E.U you will benefit from a European health card as this will cover initial emergency treatment, your insurance policy will pay out for treatment over and above this. Whilst travelling in Europe you should seek at least £1 million in medical cover. The cost of treatment in the U.S.A is likely to bankrupt the average person so here this cover is essential and a figure of £2 million in protection should be sought. It is important to remember to volunteer any health problems you suffer from, however minor they may seem, to your insurer. Failure to do so could result in voiding of the policy.

2: Personal baggage; this feature will cover you baggage if it is lost or stolen and also cover the cost of temporarily replacing items if it is delayed by several days. Under this feature you personal belongings will also be covered, subject to a maximum individual item limit and an overall policy limit. Failure to adequately look after you luggage and personal items could result in the travel insurance not provider paying out. The standard level of cover should be set to around £1500 but this varies greatly between policies.

3: Theft cover; Although this feature comes under the same branch as personal baggage cover it is important to distinguish the fact that you will normally receive protection on your holiday cash and items such as camera’s when you are on your holiday. You should seek to have a minimum cover level of £250 for your cash, and ensure you split your spending money into several different forms such as; cash, traveller’s cheques and credit or debit card. This will help ensure you have a back up if you are to have one method of payment stolen. Remember never to take all your money out with you and make use of a safe if provided in the accommodation.

4: Cancellation cover; this is a very important feature as it will usually protect you in the event your holiday is cancelled by the tour operator or yourself as long as the situation meets certain criteria (these vary from one insurer to the next, a typical exclusion would be the knowledge that you were likely to cancel your holiday at the time of taking out the cover). Usually covered are; illness, death (usually a close family member) and redundancy. You can expect anywhere up to and over £3000 as a standard and certainly recommended level of cover.

5: last but not least we come to Personal liability cover; this can be important as it protects you if you are sued by a third party due to accidentally causing injury or damage to themselves or their property. You should aim to have a minimum cover of £1 million in this area as it can be especially important in the current compensation culture.

Ensure that you have the above 5 features included on your travel insurance policy at the recommended levels and you should be all set for your holiday safe in the knowledge you are covered for these eventualities.

Travel insurance is not something you think about when you are planning a holiday but it is none the less an essential along with the suntan lotion. If you are young and single you may think what all the fuss is about, what are the chances of something happening on your holiday.

Finding a good deal on cheaper holiday insurance does take a bit of work, maybe only fifteen minutes of your time. It could save you money and get you better travel cover at the same time.

You should consider a travel insurance comparison site that allows you to compare the prices and level of cover provided by many different policies. You can find all the information you need in one place and saves visiting several different travel insurance sites to get the best quote.

One problem with finding a cheap holiday insurance deal is that it can be difficult to find exactly what a policy covers. The main areas of cover for any sort of travel insurance is cover for loss of baggage, the cost of any medical expenses and the cost of cancellations.

With a travel insurance comparison you can see exactly what is and what is not covered. There is no point in getting insurance if it does not pay out for what you were expecting. Comparing travel holiday insurance on a single site allows you to see the cost and benefits of different policies side by side allowing you to make an informed decision.

One important factor to consider is the amount of excess that you will be liable for on any claim. Whilst a higher level of excess usually means a cheaper policy upfront it may often be a false economy. Make sure that any cover you get will not leave you out of pocket when it comes to making a claim.

There are different types of travel insurance cover. You may want a single or multi trip annual cover insurance policy, you may need cover for a longer or extended trip if you are backpacking and visiting several countries in a single trip. You may be over 70 but still want to be able to get a competitive deal.

With a travel insurance comparison site you can enter in your exact requirements and the site will search for the best matches for your needs. You will then be able to compare the cost of policies that do cover your specific travel needs.

Our older generations have been getting some negative press due to their alleged bad behaviour while on holiday abroad – earning them the unfortunate nickname ‘Saga Louts’. The same seniors don’t behave badly and earn themselves an ASBO at home. So what’s going on?

Fun and reckless behaviour is not exclusive to the young. It seems the people we used to look upon as role models are often the ones misbehaving these days. Apparently, the number of mature drinkers is rising while the number of teenage drinkers has dropped. Young people are worrying about their carbon footprints, growing their own vegetables, and spurning drink and drugs. Role reversal? It seems so.

Many older folks are ignoring their health problems and throwing old-fashioned caution to the wind. They are jetting off abroad, often without getting a health check from their GP – or taking out travel insurance! The Foreign Office has expressed concern about this new generation of retirees who are putting themselves at unnecessary risk.

Are these ageing rebels breaking the mold? What happened to our dear old grannies who spent their days baking cakes, knitting mysterious garments for us and trying their luck in the bingo halls? Where is the quiet grandpa who spent his days hiding in the potting shed with the newspaper and racing form? Perhaps they revert to a more staid persona at home, but once they have a taste for foreign travel and adventure there’s no stopping this new silver jet set!

Drinking, or rather binge drinking, is reported to be the cause of most of the problems. Their benders often result in these oldies-but-baddies ending up in jail, hospital or even the mortuary! Why shouldn’t they let their hair down (what’s left of it) or have a knees up (so what if they’re plastic). Many are wealthier than they used to be and feel they deserve to make up for all the years of sacrifice.

The over 55′s are reported to be among the largest group of people participating in dodgy activities like bungee jumping, skydiving, and paragliding! These ‘denture venturers’ as they have been labelled, often outshine younger dare-devils. The young are becoming the new fuddy-duddies, tut-tut-ing the antics of their irresponsible elders!

There’s no question that obtaining affordable travel insurance can be difficult for the older traveller. Cover varies from company to company, so it’s best to shop around for the right policy. Many companies set age restrictions in the mid 60′s for annual multi-trip policies and travel to the USA and Canada – due to the high cost of medical care. The over 70′s may have difficulty finding an affordable policy, especially if they have a medical history which includes conditions like heart disease, stroke or diabetes. Fifty used to be old, but 50 is the new 40 as they say, 60 the new 50, and so on. After working hard all their lives and paying taxes, the over 50s may feel they have earned it. Many won’t get their state pension at 60 as they planned, but will have to work until they are 65, 70 or beyond because the government changed the rules. The retirement carrot is being dangled further down the road now. Who wouldn’t get an attitude! No wonder they’re buying Harley Davidson hogs and hitting the highways while they can!

Maybe older folks feel time is running out and it’s foolhardy to stock up the freezer. Perhaps they don’t care whether they make the return trip from their holiday. In a way you can’t blame them, but one major downside to their rash behaviour is the impact it can have on the holiday plans of others. Older travellers who don’t see their GP for a check-up may not be medically fit to fly. There are reports that in-flight medical emergencies are on the increase, causing distress and chaos and sometimes requiring the pilot to make an unscheduled landing.

So, are they wrong to enjoy their silver or golden years and kick up their heels as they burn up the inheritance money? We probably shouldn’t pass judgment. However, the family may not be amused if grandma has no travel insurance and breaks her neck jet skiing in Spain! Emergency medical treatment abroad can cost a small fortune and emergency repatriation (dead or alive) can be extremely expensive. The house and nest-egg they intended to leave to the kids could vanish as fast as a nice glass of bubbly if there’s no travel insurance to help cover the costs.

Should we reprimand our seniors and send them clucking back to the bingo halls? Whatever your views may be, it’s probably too late anyway. Like free-range hens, they’ve broken free of the coop, scratched some dirt, and had a taste of sunshine and freedom. Why not let them flap those bingo wings and fly while they can!

If you are planning to travel, you may be questioning the need for travel insurance. While there are some people who do not take the time to purchase travel insurance, others believe it is as much of a necessity as cash. No one can predict the future, and unexpected accidents or problems can happen at any time. Difficulties are more apt to happen when you are away from home and in an unfamiliar place. Without traveler’s insurance, expenses accrued due to unforeseen happenings can be very high.

Some travelers are more at risk for becoming the victims of potential problems. Young adults, students, the elderly, and those with poor health should invest in insurance, and individuals traveling out of the country would benefit from protection as well. Anyone who is planning a short-term stay, such as a family visit or business trip, should also consider purchasing insurance. Many people have a mistaken sense of security during short trips, but accidents and issues can arise no matter how long the vacation is.

Travel policies can provide coverage for a number of different situations. Major concerns during any trip are potential medical emergencies. Accidents involving injury or hospitalization can be very costly. An insurance package can cover any medical expenses you may incur during your travels. Treatments for illnesses may be covered, as well as emergency prescriptions. Traveler’s insurance can also cover injuries and personal losses due to severe weather conditions or emergency evacuations.

Personal belongings are protected with a suitable insurance policy. Lost wallets, traveler’s checks, and passports will be covered. The insurer will provide you with emergency funds and pay for any replacement documents. Damaged or lost luggage will also be covered. If an airline cancels or delays a flight, travel insurance pays for extra nights in a hotel and refunds a canceled ticket. If you need to do the canceling due to personal illness or tragedy, insurers will refund the cost of the ticket.

Travel insurance can protect you from the moment you pay for your trip until the moment you arrive back home. Insurance is purchased in the same manner as regular insurance. You pay a certain amount for a specific amount of coverage. If you plan to purchase travel insurance, you should research the costs and benefits offered by the providers. Find out what your existing medical insurance covers before you choose any travel policy. Purchasing traveler’s cover can make your vacation less stressful. You can enjoy your trip without having to worry about life’s little surprises.

You probably have health insurance in Australia, right? So, shouldn’t you make sure that your health and emergency medical costs are also covered when you travel abroad? Travel health insurance covers your medical costs when you travel overseas. Your Australian health cover and Medicare are unlikely to cover you for overseas travel and medical costs overseas can be a lot higher than those you are used to in Australia.

Even if you don’t have regular health insurance at home, you should consider travellers’ insurance to cover you for a medical emergency or accident. The reality is that even normally healthy people often get sick or even worse on holiday. Ever noticed how as soon as the pressure comes off and you get to relax, you come down with the flu or worse? Overseas holidays for Australians generally start with a reasonably long flight. Flying is a great way to pick up a disease before you even reach the resort’s poolside bar!

Having arrived at your holiday destination, there is, of course, the usual risks of a climate you are not used to and local food – again, food poisoning is not just a cliché; it can result in a serious medical emergency if you get unlucky.

Often, your average holidaymaker gets into trouble when they go from a sedentary office job in real life to deep sea diving or skiing on holiday. It seems that we all feel invincible on holiday, and in some cases, the joy of the moment overcomes common sense safety precautions. Or our unfit body is just not up to our athletic ideals!

Plus, things do sometimes work differently overseas; for instance, how many tourists have ended up in the hospital because they forget, just for a minute, that they are driving on the wrong side of the road? It’s particularly easy to forget if you hire a scooter, as is commonly done in the Pacific and some Asian countries. Scooters don’t have an offset steering wheel to remind you that you should be keeping right on the road!

Travel health insurance can help if the worst happens while you are overseas. For most people, it won’t happen, but just because you have never had an accident or a serious illness at home doesn’t mean it can’t happen to you at some point. You should not assume that it can’t happen to you on holiday – unfortunately, it can. Being ill or injured on holiday is bad enough, but you don’t want to return home to a lifetime of debt to pay off the bills!

A good travel health insurance policy is a small price to pay for peace of mind. It will cover you not just for serious medical assistance, but also for English-speaking assistance if you need advice for a condition that is worrisome. Is it a bad cold or malaria? If the worst happens, it will pay for the MediVac home too. If that skiing accident resulted in a broken leg – you may need a first-class seat to get home – travel insurance will normally pay for that too.

Travelling is great fun generally, but sometimes, it’s a bit tough on your health. That’s why travel health insurance is a must have for your packing list.

When planning a backpacking trip, travel insurance may be the last thing on your mind.

The result is that many backpackers leave the UK without such a policy in place despite carrying an average £600-worth of luggage, according to a survey carried out by one travel insurance company.

In the consumer society we live in it is quite usual for a backpacker’s luggage to contain mobile phones, digital cameras, laptops, mp3 player and other expensive items. The minimum value of the gadgets carried by the average backpacker currently stands at £200 – with many carrying far in excess of this amount.

Yet a third of travellers fail to take out any insurance policy, which means these items are uninsured against loss or theft.

Statistics appear to show that one in 10 tourists have found themselves the target of thieves whilst travelling abroad. The average loss in these cases stands at over £100. It may not sound a lot but when you’re travelling on a budget £100 can go a long way.

In addition, 8% of travellers have their luggage stolen from the baggage carousel in the airport – without travel insurance in place this can be very hard to replace without using a large amount of the spending money you originally set aside.

Finding travel insurance for a backpacking holiday is not that hard – in fact many companies offer cover aimed specifically at this type of vacation. You will usually find that it is very cost effective, with the average policy costing less than £5 per week on a 12-month trip.

The majority of those who fail to take out cover do so purely because of the cost which is really a false economy. With over £600 of luggage and a 12-month policy costing a fraction of this, they stand to lose a lot if they should become the unfortunate victim of a crime.

It seems that the biggest reason for failing to take out travel insurance is not so much the cost as lack of awareness and understanding. If you take some time to read the key features of a policy you will find you are covered for many eventualities and the benefit of the policy becomes self-evident.

Finding cheap travel insurance is easier than you think, as long as you are willing to spend a little time researching the topic and visiting several sites to get a good spread of quotes. Aim for a minimum of three quotes.

The same applies when looking for hotels and accommodation in advance. There are now many comparison sites that make the process of finding and booking accommodation online considerably easier.

You can usually find an internet café on your travels and you can often book just a day or two ahead. You may find that using this method makes your backpacking trip that little bit easier – and your money stretch further still.
